The worst rains in 30 years have caused massive floods and landslides in Peru killing at least 97 people and leaving 182,116 homeless. The havoc the rains have caused has affected more than 813,239 people prompting the Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia Nacional (The National Center for Emergency Operations) or COEN to call the country a natural disaster. COEN reports over 124,164 people are in need of assistance.

There is no end in sight as meteorologists said more rain is expected specially; in the northern, central and western areas of Peru. Experts say it may take more than three years for Peru to recover from the magnitude of the destruction of homes, roads and bridges.

Members of the Asociacion Peruanos Unidos (APU) is coordinating "Todos Unidos Por Peru" Spanish for All United for Peru, a fund raising campaign with the St. Augustine community at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Lawrence.

The Asociacion Peruanos Unidos has set up a separate bank account at Enterprise bank for this fund campaign and will kick off the fund drive with a radiothon, an on-the-air radio campaign on April 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., APU in collaboration with Radio Catolica WGUA 98.1 FM will host a Radiothon, to raise money for Peru. APU and the Augustinian community at St. Mary will run a year-long campaign to help the victims of Peru. All donations collected during this campaign will directly go to two St. Augustine Bishops currently residing and serving the communities affected by the flood in Peru. Bishop Daniel Thomas Turley Murphy, O.S.A. in Chulucanas, Peru, and Bishop Robert Francis Prevost, O.S. A. in Chiclayo, Peru will directly distribute the donations to families affected by the mudslides in the following regions: La Libertad Region: Trujillo, Pacasmayo, and Buenos Aires.; The Piura Region: The Morropón Province, Chulucanas, the Ayabaca Providence, Pacaipampa District and the District De La Matanza.

In addition to the radiothon, the Asociacion Peruanos Unidos will continue relief efforts with several social events throughout the year.
